The Sculpture Garden 2011
The Sculpture Garden 2011, with over 150 exhibits by 49 different sculptors, was enjoyed by thousands of visitors during the month of May. The exhibits in a wide range of media were displayed throughout the formal gardens, with some larger exhibits displayed in the parkland. Indoor and smaller exhibits were displayed in the main entrance to Birtley House and also in the enclosed courtyard. Teas at weekends and Bank Holidays, with homemade cakes and cream teas prepared by the Birtley chefs, were hugely popular. With a quiz for children under 12, the exhibition provided something for everyone.
As always, entrance to the exhibition was free but visitors kindly gave donations in aid of the Community Foundation for Surrey who support local community and voluntary projects. In total we were able to raise over £1,400 from the donations, in addition to the £1,150 we raised from a Wine Tasting held in aid of the Foundation.
Our grateful thanks go to all our exhibiting sculptors and especially to sculptors Peter Clothier, Malcolm West and Carlos Dare who ran various sculpture demonstrations. Last, but not least, our thanks go to sculptor Juliet Scott, our Exhibition Designer, for the inspiration and development of The Sculpture Garden concept at Birtley House.
